The Kancamagus Highway

Today we left the roller coaster terrain of Maine and we enter northern New Hampshire. Maine had one last obstacle to throw at us as we left and that was a long 14 % uphill. I hope I never get on a bike in Maine again.

After our first rest stop and we hit the state line we had a relatively flat ride to the Kancamagus Highway that passes through the White Mountains. It was a formidable climb that was about 20 miles long. It was a struggle near the top and once I reached the top I was attached by black flies so I snapped a few pictures and raced down the mountain to Woodstock, New Hampshire. I was an exhilarating 15 miles of beautiful downhill. Although only 4,000 feet, the White Mountains are extremely impressive and I would love to come back to this area with Cindy and do some hiking and exploring.

Once into Woodstock I was pleasantly surprised to see that we we’re staying in a house/hotel owned by pastor Marcus. I actually slept in a bed in a room with a shower. Pastor Marcus and his Loon Mountain Mission Church do a lot of great things for the community. He has a pavilion with a wood fired pizza oven and he has events there that raise money for various charities. Tonight we were his charity and he cooked each of us our very on specialized pizza. The pizza was delicious and some of the congregation made dessert and met with us. It was an awesome evening.

Tomorrow we supposedly have a shorter day milage wise but that means we’re going to be doing a lot of climbing but tonight I have a bed and I’m happy.
