In the Land of Dixie

Today’s 80 mile ride was again flat and fast. We had traveled 30 miles and we had 15 negative feet of climb. In Pittsburgh on a typical ride you can’t go more than a mile without gaining 100 feet. I’m not complaining but on these flat rides you pedal continuously for 7 hours. No gliding down hills where you receive a little rest for your legs.

The ride was uneventful but we did see some remnants of the old south. There were a number of plantations in various states of disrepair and some that were turned into touristy museum. A very exciting part of my morning was stopping at a Piggly Wiggly‘s were everyone in the store seemed to disapprove of my spandex riding shorts. I heard one guy say, “Will you look at that, my, my!” Man spandex in Georgia is definitely not in style.

I did get to visit the worlds smallest church, or so the sign said. I guess someone goes around measuring the sizes of churches, doing God’s work.

At the final rest stop, Amy, a frind from the 2019 Northern Tier stopped by and brought us a number of goodies. Amy is a professor at Georgia Southern and an incredible cyclist. It was really good to see her again.

The Baptist Church where we’re staying is very nice and the women who work there made us cookies and helped us with laundry. I feel like I get religion in all the churches we stay at through osmosis while I’m sleeping. I might start speaking in tongues soon.

Tomorrow is another 80 mile day and we get to ride through the heart of Savannah. I’m excited to do that and being that it’s Sunday the traffic should be light.
