Today was a rest day at Whitefish, Montana. What a great little outdoor adventure town. It has a multitude of very good restaurants and bars and art galleries. We’re staying at a Hampton Inn and the employees are very courteous and helpful as I’ve found most Montanans to be. Cindy and I got up early and returned to Glacier National Park to hike Avalanche Trail. It was a gorgeous day and sun filtered down through the ancient forest as we made our 2 mile trek to an emerald glacier lake. Along the way deer walked along the trail eating berries and other vegetation not moving as we approached them. At times Cindy and I could almost reach out and touch them. We sat at the lake for awhile gazing up at the magnificent waterfalls that streamed down from far above. It was like we were in a forgotten magical world. We finally headed back and visited some of the falls near the main park road. At one of these falls I saw a father of some middle school age children lecturing them about not getting too close to the edge of the raging stream when he slipped and fell in. His main concern was to save his cell phone and he tossed it to his wife as soon as he surfaced. The kids were no help because they were rolling on the ground with laughter. The portly father was able to pull himself out before he was swept away. I felt bad for him in that his lesson was a total failure and I’m sure in the future his children are doomed to repeat their father’s mistake. Cindy and I returned to Whitefish where we had a fabulous meal at Caio Mumbo and a nightcap on Casey’s Top Bar. Yesterday was a perfect day. Tomorrow I’m back on the road.
