Driving to the next town with my pet giraffe

Our bikes lined up in the church.

A rest stop at Inverness Montana, not Scotland.

Route 2 has everyone on edge. The small shoulder with deep rumble strips cut into it gives us almost no room to ride and the speeding vehicles continually make us hold our breath each time they zoom by. We had a steady 15 to 20 mile an hour wind blowing in our faces as we gradually climbed 1,900 feet. Some people left town at 5:00 AM to beat the stronger gusts of wind that usually begin howling at around 10:00. Today I just put my head down and stayed as far right as I could. I actually used some of my YMCA spinning class techniques to power through the worst parts of the day. The scenery has been the same as it’s been since we left Wolf Point, the Indian Reservation. However, later in the day I spotted what I thought were mountains. Lewis and Clark saw the same mountains and thought they were the Rockies but later learned that they weren’t. The Rockies are incredibly bigger so these small mountains became known as “The False Rockies.” Tomorrow the wind is supposed to really howl at 30 to 40 mph plus there is road construction that may slow us down even more. Some people have decided not to ride. I’m going to give it a go. If I need to bail out I will. It’s always good to live to ride another day.

Just as I was about to post this blog entry the route leaders came into the room and told us conditions would not be safe tomorrow so we’re all being shuttled to our next town. We all live to ride another day!
