Day 22 - We're In 'THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE,' but the Locals Call it Texas

Last night's sleep was interrupted every hour on the hour by a train blowing its whistle as it thundered by the RV park where we had pitched our tents. We did manage a little sleep and awoke to a steady light drizzle that continued all during our 60 mile ride to Sanderson, TX. We broke camp and sat in a small pleasant pavilion at the RV park and waited for the only restaurant in town to open for breakfast. The Oasis restaurant was appropriately named and we enjoyed a great morning repast before heading out into the rain.

The first 20 miles were a gradual climb with a steady headwind blowing in our faces. It was surreal as we struggled forward. The mist and light fog veiled the hills and mesas that lined the long rough pavement. A wild pig, ran along the brush to my right and I was worried it might try to ram me. They're considered dangerous but I believe it was as frightened of me as I was of it.

I reached the first rest stop alone and was greeted by Kaylyn standing in the rain cheering me on. We all regrouped at the rest stop and we were happy to learn that we had finally crested the hill and the next 40 miles would be easier, and they were. The remaining miles were uneventful and I felt like I was on a large black conveyor belt being pulled along by the other cyclist. Only a few cars and trucks were using this road and it seemed as though the road had been reserved just for us. It rained harder as we neared Sanderson. The only store in Sanderson was a Stripes gas station. I insisted that James have his first corn dog. He was very hesitant to buy one but I insisted. He took a bite and was instantly converted. Now it will be more than just hamburgers for him.

We sprinted from the convenience store to the Baptist Church where we will spend the night. The minister's wife had treats waiting for us and as I lay on my air mattress writing this blog I smell a delicious dinner being prepared by her. Tonight is movie night. We usually have a movie when a church has a large TV in the commissary.
